3 Stars Not particularly fun
If you are familiar with DDR, this is, in many ways, more of the same. However, this first outing for the franchise on xbox 360 is a bit of a miss. First off, the song list is annoyingly short. There are unlockable songs, but they are only unlockable through “quest mode” which is probably the dumbest way to play since the challenges are almost unofrgiving and it is very time consuming. You will play many of the same songs over and over, all -ironically- to get a few new songs!
I think the graphics and sound are great, the game looks and plays very similarly to the arcade. The graphics are a bit of an issue since it is sometimes hard to follow the steps against the strobing, colorful animations going on in the background.
In all, there are really only a couple of songs you’ll be excited to dance along to and many of the other songs feel like interchangable techno. In addition, the steps feel more like technical excersizes in timing and coordination, rather than more fluid dance steps. I remember the Playstation DDR games being much better on the basics(dance moves and song variety) than this game.
-From what I understand, DDR Universe 2 is a much better game, I would recommend starting there. This one is only for completists and the hardcore DDR fans.
5 Stars Not a game for me
My daughter introduced me to this ‘game’. I have found it to be excellent exercise regimen when the weather is inclement. I just love it! It is soooo much fun.
5 Stars I caught my husband!!!!
When I ordered this game my husband laughed at me and said he wouldnt be caught dead on it. Liar..he cant dance at all but I keep catching him on “MY” ddr. Its a blast, I think I may have lost a couple of pounds–woo hoo and its great fun when we have friends over. I still cant believe that my husband LOVES this game. Its so funny and the poor clumsy guy just seems so proud of himself. Now if I could only get my cute little grandma on it.
3 Stars Ok for cheap fun, but consider the newer versions
Bought the bundled game and pad:
Game:
The game has a new user mode, good for newbies who need training.
It was not clear that you could only play 2 players if you had two pads (or the handheld controller), otherwise you must log in/out of your xbox to switch XBox live accounts between songs if you want to save your game.
There seem to be very few hits / radio songs with many being similar versions of the same old beats.
The animations are rather simplistic and graphics appear almost pixillated on a big screen HDTV.
Would have tried playing against others on XBox Live, but could never find any matching dance partner. I think most others have already given up on this one.
The quest mode is a pain in the behind because many of the quests require you to do things that most of the random songs do not have, so even when completing a song with high marks, you still fail.
Overall, This game was a bit disappointing after what I remember playing so many a time at the arcade. I wish I had read the other product reviews prior to buying. Looking now, I should have paid a little extra for Universe 2 or 3.
However, the game is ok for a cheap starter and my wife and I have had hours of fun playing. Any game that gets you off your seat is a plus. This one will make you sweat, so dress appropriately.
4 Stars A fun way to work out at home.
I have all 3 DDRU games for xbox 360 now and they keep me busy. I use the game primarily for exercise. The variety of songs on each version is ok, and when I get bored with one, I just switch to another one. If I go a couple days without playing DDR, I start to miss it! And, I’m not even that much of a video game player.
